In 2008, Atsushi Senju and Gergely Csibra published in Current Biology (18, 668\u2013671) an often quoted and important contribution to natural pedagogy theory: \u201cGaze following in human infants depends on communicative signals.\u201d In 2014, J. Szufnarowska, Rohlfing, K.J., Fawcett, C., & Gredeb\u00e4ck, G. published in Scientific Reports (4, 5304) a discussion of Senju and Csibra\u2019s article, under the title \u201cIs ostension any more than attention?” Senju, Csibra and collaborators replied to Szufnarowska et al’s in an online commentary in Scientific Reports. However, Scientific Reports recently removed their comments without notifying them. Gergo Csibra has asked us to re-publish their commentary here, at cognitionandculture.net, for the record, and for those who are interested. We do so very willingly. The issue is relevant to our interests. Moreover, it is a good thing that a blog like ours can to some modest extent counterbalance the arbitrary decision of a journal of the Nature Group. Here below are the abstract of the two articles and the commentary by Gergely Csibra, Miko\u0142aj Hernik, Rubeena Shamsudheen, Denis Tatone, and Atsushi Senju.<\/p>\n

Here is the summary of Senju and Csibra’s 2008 article:<\/p>\n

\u201cHumans are extremely sensitive to ostensive signals, like eye contact or calling their name, that indicate someone’s communicative intention towards them [1-3]. Infants also pay attention to these signals [4-6] but it is unknown whether they appreciate their significance in the initiation of communicative acts. In two experiments, we employed video presentation of an actor turning towards one of two objects, and recorded infants\u2019 gaze following behaviour [7-13] with eye-tracking techniques [11, 12]. We found that 6-monthold infants followed the adult’s gaze (a potential communicative-referential signal) towards an object only when such an act is preceded by ostensive cues like direct gaze (Experiment 1) and infant-directed speech (Experiment 2). Such a link between the presence of ostensive signals and gaze following suggests that this behaviour serves a functional role in assisting infants to effectively respond to referential communication directed to them. While gaze following in many non-human species supports social information gathering [14-18], in humans it initially appears to reflect the expectation of a more active, communicative role from the information source.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here is the abstract of J. Szufnarowska, Rohlfing, K.J., Fawcett, C., & Gredeb\u00e4ck, G.’s discussion of Senju and Csibra\u2019s article under the title \u201cIs ostension any more than attention?\u201d Scientific Reports (4, 5304):<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to natural pedagogy theory, infants are sensitive to particular ostensive cues that communicate to them that they are being addressed and that they can expect to learn referential information. We demonstrate that 6-month-old infants follow others’ gaze direction in situations that are highly attention-grabbing. This occurs irrespective of whether these situations include communicative intent and ostensive cues (a model looks directly into the child’s eyes prior to shifting gaze to an object) or not (a model shivers while looking down prior to shifting gaze to an object). In contrast, in less attention-grabbing contexts in which the model simply looks down prior to shifting gaze to an object, no effect is found. These findings demonstrate that one of the central pillars of natural pedagogy is false. Sensitivity to gaze following in infancy is not restricted to contexts in which ostensive cues are conveyed.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, Gergely Csibra, Miko\u0142aj Hernik, Rubeena Shamsudheen, Denis Tatone, and Atsushi Senju published in Scientific Reports an online commentary on Szufnarowska et al.\u2019s paper. However, Scientific Reports recently removed their comments without notifying them. Gergo Csibra has asked us to re-publish here, at Cognition&Culture, their comments for the record, and for those who are interested. We do so very willingly. The issue is relevant to our interests and it is a good thing that a blog like ours can to some modest extent counterbalance the arbitrary decision of a journal of the Nature Group. Here, then is this Commentary:<\/p>\n

Commentary<\/p>\n

“Below we offer a few brief comments on the paper by Szufnarowska et al. (2014).<\/p>\n

1. The effect sizes are reported as d values (which, we assume, indicate Cohen\u2019s d values). Cohen\u2019s d values for single-sample t-tests, like the ones reported in this paper, can be calculated from the t-values as d=t\/sqrt(n), where n is the sample size (here, n=22). However, the reported d values do not match the ones calculated from this formula. Rather, they seem to have been calculated from a different formula, d=2*t\/sqrt(df), where df is the degrees of freedom (here, df=21). This latter formula is valid only for two-sample t-tests, and using it for assessing the effect size for single-sample tests results in overestimating the effect size by more than a factor of 2. When we calculate the effect sizes from the appropriate formula, only one of those reported in the paper and its supplementary material was \u2018large\u2019 (duration measure for Nodding), and only one of them was \u2018medium\u2019 (frequency measure with Direct gaze) by conventional labelling.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. The effect size calculations for the paired-sample t-tests seem to have employed the same formula. This is also inappropriate.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. The error bars on Figure 3 do not represent the SE values, although this is asserted in the figure legend. For example, the error bar depicted on the second column suggests that the difference score (DS) for Direct gaze was about 0.235, and the corresponding SE value was about 0.052. As in this case t=DS\/SE for the single-sample t-test comparing DS to zero, such values would result in t=4.519 rather than t=2.156, which was reported in the text. The other error bars are also smaller at least by a factor two than what would be expected by the reported t values.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. The figure legend for Figure 3 states that \u201cpluses indicate p-values = .05\u201d while the text reports that for both columns, marked by pluses, p > .05.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Under what circumstances one can use one-tailed, instead of two-tailed, statistical tests is a matter of debate in psychological research. While we do not necessarily object to applying one-tailed tests in this study, it should be pointed out that this choice of statistics produced more relaxed criteria of acceptance of statistical significance than almost all studies with comparable methodology, which, as a rule, adopted more stringent two-tailed tests (see, for example, Gredeb\u00e4ck et al., 2008). For a comparison, using the statistical criteria applied by the original study that the present study intended to partly replicate (Senju & Csibra, 2008), only two of the results reported in the main part of the paper would be considered significant: the facilitation of gaze following by Direct Gaze compared to the baseline (i.e., zero) and to the No cue condition. Remarkably, this replicates Senju & Csibra (2008).<\/span><\/p>\n

6. An important difference between the design of the present study and that of Senju and Csibra (2008) is that the latter applied a between-subject design. This design was intentionally chosen to avoid the possibility of carry-over effects.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Szufnarowska et al. note that the stimuli in the non-ostensive condition of Exp. 1 in Senju and Csibra (2008) could have drawn infants\u2019 attention to themselves, and thus away from the actor. If \u2018attention\u2019 here means overt visual attention, than this was not the case: the cartoon image was presented on the head to make sure that infants looked at the actor when she turned her head. Senju and Csibra (2008) measured and reported that infants looked at this stimulus as much as they looked at the face in the ostensive condition. In contrast, the design of the present study did not ensure that infants\u2019 overt attention would be on the head at the moment of the crucial cue: infants\u2019 looked at least 250 ms less to the face during the No cues condition than during any other condition, and hence were less likely to observe the directional cue of head turning. The authors did not report whether these differences was statistically reliable, but this seems very likely given the confidence interval values they included in the paper. Thus, the present results, unlike the ones reported by Senju and Csibra (2008), could indeed be explained by the difference in overt visual attention that infants paid to the absence of cues versus the various cues employed in the other conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. If the term \u2018attention\u2019 refers not to overt visual attention but to some other mediating mechanism, it would be necessary to supply a definition or a behavioural or physiological measure that would allow for the testing of the engagement of such a mechanism. Without a definition and\/or an independent measurement of attention, it will be difficult to avoid the circularity of arguments represented by claims such as \u201cyoung infants\u2019 attention is high in response to attention-grabbing human actions\u201d and that \u201cFuture work should continue to explore the features of cues that infants respond to in order to determine the nature of their attention.\u201d These sentences suggest that \u2018attention\u2019 is used in the present paper as a descriptive term rather than as an explanatory mechanism.<\/span><\/p>\n

9. It is also proposed that, in Senju & Csibra (2008), \u201cinfants could have been confused because of the sudden absence of the attractive stimulus\u201d after the disappearance of the cue in the non-ostensive condition. Had they been really confused, it would be difficult to explain how could they follow the actor\u2019s gaze after the very same visual stimulus in the infant-directed speech condition of Exp. 2.<\/span><\/p>\n

10. We were surprised to see that the paper by Triesch et al. (2006) was cited as \u201cresearch suggesting that attention-based mechanisms can account for infants\u2019 acquisition of gaze following.\u201d The computational model offered by Triesch et al. (2006) did not include any mechanism corresponding to \u2018attention.\u2019 The term \u2018attention\u2019 used in that paper (see also De\u00e1k et al., 2014) exclusively to refer to overt visual behaviour of infants and caregivers (and their equivalents in the computational model).<\/span><\/p>\n
