Gibbs and Guy Van Orden, published in <em>Topics in Cognitive Science<\/em> in 2012, <a href=\"http:\/\/cognitionandculture.local\/wp-content\/uploads\/Topics-in-Cognitive-Science-2012-Gibbs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pragmatic Choice in Conversation<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cognitionandculture.local\/wp-content\/uploads\/2945254545_ab454ae332_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2873\" src=\"http:\/\/cognitionandculture.local\/wp-content\/uploads\/2945254545_ab454ae332_b-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"2945254545_ab454ae332_b\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cognitionandculture.local\/wp-content\/uploads\/2945254545_ab454ae332_b-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cognitionandculture.local\/wp-content\/uploads\/2945254545_ab454ae332_b.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The authors are discussing regularity and variability in human conversation and the (in)ability of pragmatics theories to explain both of them. They offer to advance the view of pragmatics based on complexity theory in order to better explain the choices people make in conversations based on context and introduce the concept of self-organized criticality in order to explain how a common ground can affect language behavior.
