Help the Cultural Evolution Society correct its gender imbalance!

Last Year, David Sloan Wilson and others launched a Society for the Study of Cultural Evolution which many of us have joined.[READMORE] We have just received from Joe Brower, the Project Coordinator, an request for help, which, at the International Cognition and Culture Institute, we definitely support: "This is where it always begins: Societies comprised mostly of men have a really hard time achieving gender balance later on. We have this one chance to start with a different equation that strongly represents women. Have you ever heard of a scientific society doing this before? Well, let us be the first and others can copy us in the future. That's what I call cultural evolution in action! Please forward this email to women (and young people, those in under-represented parts of the world, related fields that might not know about us, …) and encourage them to sign up."

We need your help!

—–

As of this moment 402 of you have filled out member profiles (thank you!)… but only 22% of those who did so are women.

This is where it always begins:

Societies comprised mostly of men have a really hard time achieving gender balance later on. We have this one chance to start with a different equation that strongly represents women.

Have you ever heard of a scientific society doing this before? Well, let us be the first and others can copy us in the future. That's what I call cultural evolution in action!

Please forward this email to women (and young people, those in under-represented parts of the world, related fields that might not know about us, …) and encourage them to sign up.

The deadline is Friday, February 26th.

[we asked: this is the deadline for voting for the officers of the society – we suggest this deadline should be postponed – ICCI]

Fill Out Your Member Profile

To become eligible to vote on society leaders, we need to get your current information into our member database.

Here's the Problem

Of the 402 member profiles filled out so far, only 90 are from women. That's only 22% of the total — a political disadvantage that will be difficult to overcome later on. In order to get women into leadership positions, we'll need a sizable population of active members to recruit from.

So this is our chance to make a difference before elections begin.

This graph was also created from the 402 member profiles received so far. Note how men far outnumber women in every age group. It does get better among the younger cohort — but we can do much better!

Please help us recruit more women into the society. If you know someone who should be in this community, please forward this email to them. And you are a women on this list who hasn't filled out a member profile, please do so now.

Sincerely,

Joe Brewer
Project Coordinator
Cultural Evolution Society
